Description
The British Isles and the Great Divisions of the Globe is a fully revised, updated, and expanded edition of Charlotte Mason’s second geography reader, The British Empire and the Great Divisions of the Globe, first published in 1882. Volume I. is based on the first half of the nineteenth-century publication and covers the British Isles, the European mainland, and the seas that wash their shores.
Perfect for use with children aged between 7 and 9, this living book is written in such a way so as to plant seeds of interest, enquiry, and curiosity in their young minds. As children travel the length and breadth of Europe, they will learn all manner of fascinating facts about its people, places, and wildlife. They will discover intriguing landforms that shape the landscape and influence the climate; they will hear stories about the people who worked the land and fought hard in the face of tremendous challenges and heartbreak.
Much of Miss Mason’s original narrative, and the general layout of the book, has been retained, but with significant alterations and additions. Where the text has been updated it has been done so with the goal of fully maintaining the spirit and style in which the original was written. There are also brand new chapters covering countries that didn’t exist in Miss Mason’s day and new and updated map questions preceding each lesson. The book is divided into three sections for ease of use and contains thirty-six short lessons to be read over the course of one academic school year.
